Introduction
Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, self-governing international university chartered in Pakistan in 1983. Its Faculty of Health Sciences in Karachi incorporates a Medical College and a School of Nursing and Midwifery. The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is a component of the University and is associated with hospitals in Karachi and Hyderabad, Pakistan, and Kabul, Afghanistan. The University is a major component of Aga Khan Development Network. AKUH is accredited by the Joint Commission International for major tertiary care. Among other units, the University has a Faculty of Health Sciences in East Africa.
The services of the Department provide surgical care, specialised in general surgery, paediatric and neonatal, urological, orthopaedic, vascular, ophthalmic, dental, breast, cardio-thoracic, head and neck, , maxillo-facial, , neuro-spinal, plastic and reconstructive surgery. Clinical services provide the basis of undergraduate and postgraduate professional education and training of physicians and surgeons.
The department has 80 full-time and part-time faculty with a strong commitment towards teaching and research.

Responsibilities
The Chair is expected to lead the faculty to achieve the University’s objectives in professional development and research, as well as provide conditions to support ethical and competent clinical practice and management of services at AKUH and its associated health care centres.
Requirements
Candidates for the Chair must have appropriate professional qualifications in Surgery and clinical experience as well as proven effectiveness in educational and professional development, leadership and management. The incumbent must be skilled in effective communication and teamwork.
The appointment will be initially for three years, renewable for a further two years subject to performance review.
