Responsibilities

The Chair will provide dynamic leadership to the department and will have the responsibility to conduct its academic and service mandate consistent with the mission and policies of AKU and AKUH. He/she will report to the Dean of the Medical College with respect to academic goals and to both the Dean and the Regional CEO, Health Services, Asia for faculty and service matters.

Requirements

​Candidates must have suitable post-graduate qualifications with extensive leadership, managerial and clinical experience in a teaching hospital. The incumbent should have strong interpersonal skills, notable achievements in research and teaching, as well as administrative experience at a senior level. The appointment will be initially for three years, renewable for a further two years subject to performance review.

​The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at AKUH was upgraded to a state-of-the-art infrastructure in 2008. More than 60,000 patient visits in a year handled by DEM include acute medical, surgical, trauma-related, gynecological and psychiatric emergencies. It is the only department in Pakistan offering a five year residency training programme. Being sensitive to the needs of the community, DEM has developed a separate area for catering to pediatric emergencies. It is also venturing the concept of urgent care services and is committed to bringing emergency medical care to the door step of the community. Through a WHO – Fogarty-Johns Hopkins collaboration, DEM has been on the forefront of research related to trauma and injury prevention in the region.
